Foundations for Independence Program
Laying the groundwork for a future of independence, choice, and opportunity!
The Program
Foundations for Independence is our flagship program, providing life-changing training since 1985.
This program is designed for working-age blind or low vision adults seeking a comprehensive, immersive residential training experience. Using the nationally recognized Structured Discovery approach, we partner with our students to develop skills, increase confidence, and build valuable mentoring relationships in a positive, challenging, and supportive environment. Our program is rooted in the philosophy of high expectations: we know blind adults can live full and meaningful lives, and this belief is reflected in everything we do.
Whether your goals include employment, school, or increasing independence in daily life, this program provides the foundations to achieve your personal goals.
What to Expect:
Non-visual training that teaches new ways of learning and doing.
A 6–9 month intensive training experience, giving you the time to build strong skills, lasting confidence, and meaningful connections.
Full participation in our Foundations curriculum, including braille, access technology, independent living skills, cane travel, and home maintenance. Additional classes in job readiness, recreation challenges, college prep, and blindness seminars expand skills and foster community inclusion.
Residential living in furnished apartments within walking distance of the Louisiana Center for the Blind and downtown Ruston.
A vibrant community of peers and mentors who believe in your potential.
