Techniques for Living Confidently: A Program for Individuals 55+

Does your vision affect your ability to read, get around independently, take care of your home, enjoy your hobbies?

The Program

Techniques for Living Confidently (TLC)

A statewide program supporting seniors 55+

Is your changing vision making it difficult to read, get around, manage your home, or enjoy your hobbies? Our TLC Program can help!

The TLC Senior Program is designed for legally blind adults 55 and older living in Louisiana. We provide opportunities to learn new blindness techniques, build confidence, and connect with peers who understand. Together, we share strategies, discover resources, and encourage one another to remain active, independent, and fully engaged in our communities. Vision loss does not need to hold you back!

Our TLC Services:

  • Peer support and community connection

  • Daily living skills

  • Independent travel

  • Low vision assessment and training

“Received your Christmas card today and I feel really blessed to have you all in my life. My life turned around in November 2007 when I attended my first Seniors retreat. Because of the encouragement & motivation that I received there my life changed drastically! I’m back in the work force and everything is so much better than it was. Thank you all also for having enough confidence in me to let me be a part of the retreats there. Thank you all for being there for me. I’m proud to be a part of the NFBL and changing what it means to be blind. ”

  • Peer Support

Through group discussions and activities, participants connect with others who share similar experiences. Together, we explore solutions to challenges related to changing vision, share encouragement, and build a network of support and understanding.

  • Daily Living Skills

Just because your vision is changing doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy life. We share tips for things like sewing, cooking, caring for children, labeling medications, organizing clothing, identifying money, and other daily tasks. We also introduce you to adaptive tools such as talking clocks and signature guides.

  • Low Vision

Our team can evaluate whether you may benefit from devices such as magnifiers, special telescopes, or sunglasses. If a device is right for you, it will be purchased on your behalf and training provided so you can use it effectively

  • Independent Travel

You can continue to travel safely and independently with confidence and dignity. We teach techniques such as using the long white cane and safe guiding methods so you can stay active with your family, friends, and community
